Don't worry, we're from the Microsoft Technical Support team.

Have you ever received a call from Microsoft Technical Support ?
I received one a few days ago. from the number 1800951723 (Australian area code) claiming that they're from Microsoft Technical Support. The scam is known as the 'cold-calling' or the 'cold-shoulder' scam. The way the scam works is they call you. They tell you that you have some viruses or they have been receiving errors and warnings in [from] your system and they can fix it by showing you the errors and the warnings from their end. So they tell you to open a web browser, go to www[dot]logmein123[dot]com, ammyy[dot]com or support[dot]me and then click on Start Download or click on the Green Start Working with Ammyy Admin button. They would then, connect to your computer remotely and supposedly fix the so called errors and warnings. They would usually use the following commands to show you the errors and warnings that are infecting your computer.

Here's a transcript of what they say.

We have been receiving some errors and warnings from your computer and we have called to help you fix these issues
If you respond with this:
Oh no. Thats not good.
They usually tell you to do this:
Look on the EXTREME left hand side of your keyboard, can you see the Windows Key?
Press that and hold it down. Now press the letter "R" as in Roomeo.
Now what can you see?

Now type, iexplore.exe support[dot]me

So, when they do that, they'll usually send you to TeamViewer, LogMeIn Rescue or Ammyy Admin.
They will ask for a username or ID to connect to the computer. When they connect to the computer, they open Event Viewer or msconfig (System Configuration, this allows the user to control what the computer opens on bootup. eventvwr shows Windows Event Logs, what the Operating System stores and can be viewed by a computer tech. These scammers will use words like 'Virus, Intrusions or Malware' these words mean nothing to them. What they are talking about is nothing real, event logs are event logs, errors and warnings are normal for an operating system. The scammers will then say, to fix this, there will be a one time charge. The charge will be [insert price here], how would you like to pay? and so, the victim falls for this and pays the scammer. So, the scammers win right? Well, not really. Most banks now have a alerting system, that alerts the bank of fraudulent purchases.

Now, to help people not fall for this scam, tell them to make sure they keep their anti-virus or anti-malware systems up to date, add their number to the do not call list which can be done here!

Don't forget, if you get a call about this, don't hang up the phone, waste as much of their time as much as you can.

Stay safe out there, it's a Jungle,
Aaron
